Surviving EMP Mini-Guide Now Available in PDF!

The Preparedness Podcast Mini Guide on Surviving an EMP attack or XME Impact is now available as a instant downloadable PDF! One of the common requests I’ve had was to release the EMP book in print and as a PDF. The PDF version is available now by clicking in the image, or on the Add To Cart button below. We hope to have the print version available soon!   The book is still available as a Kindle book from Amazon by clicking here. Surviving EMP – Faraday Box Testing – Part 1

When I was testing different Faraday containers, I took three videos of what worked and demonstrated it shielding 50,000 watts of AM radio signal. A strong AM radio signal, is a good test of EM/RF shielding, because the properties of medium wave allow it to easily penetrate most materials. Since we want to shield against high-levels of EM waves, if you can block a strong AM signal when standing at the base of the station’s antenna, you know you have decent shielding. in this first video, I show how nesting Faraday shielding with aluminum foil and a metal trash can … Continue reading

Solar Flares and Coronal Mass Ejections

(You can also listen to the podcast on EMP and EMP Protection.) Be sure to check out the videos I did that demonstrates shielding against a 50,000 watt AM signal, and the Surviving EMP Mini-Guide: The Preparedness Podcast Mini-Guide: Surviving EMP [Kindle Edition] ebook Testing Faraday shielding for EMP, part 1 Testing Faraday shielding for EMP, part 2 Testing Faraday shielding for EMP, part 3 We often hear about “solar storms” or how a solar flare is hitting the Earth, but what, exactly, are they? The term, “Solar Storm,” can refer to either a solar flare or a coronal mass ejection, … Continue reading

The Sun Has Flare

These past few flares aren’t headed towards earth, but the sunspot that’s creating them is rotating in our direction.  While the odds of us getting hit by a solar flare big enough to knock out the power grid is pretty low on any given day, we are currently in a solar max cycle.  Solar scientists have already come out and stated that the chance of a very large flare hitting the earth is higher for the next few years (see A History of Massive Solar Storms, Humankind faces huge solar storms, Earth has 1-in-8 chance of massive solar megastorm by 2020, Space weather expert … Continue reading

What Is A Grid Down Scenario?

A “Grid Down” event or situation is an event where the power grid goes down.  In other words, a blackout.  Typically, Grid Down refers to a widespread event and one where the power isn’t expected to be quickly restored. A Grid Down Scenario, then, would refer to any event that impacts the ability to generate power on a wide basis.  Further, because the more serious of grid down scenarios involve very long periods of time before the power would be restored, if ever, planning for it usually requires a combination of tactical and strategic planning. Electrical power is so ubiquitous … Continue reading

EMP Means Hand Tools

Last night at the Prep 101 meeting, Fred and I were giving a class on the effects of EMP, or Electromagnetic Pulse.  Specifically, we were discussing what EMP is, what the effects are if it were to happen, and what you can do to protect your gear from it. I’ll be getting into these topics later, both on the podcast and this site in the not-too-distant future, but one of the members had a question that showed he was connecting the dots.  His question was, “If the pulse of the EMP is going to take out the power grid, should … Continue reading
