4 Gun Safety Rules

Notes for this section:

  • Good reminder
  • All gun accidents break one of these rules.  If you follow these rules, you will never have an accident.
  1. ALWAYS treat every weapon as if it is loaded.
  2. NEVER put your finger on the trigger until you are ready to fire.
  3. NEVER point the weapon at anything that you don’t intend to DESTROY or KILL.
  4. ALWAYS be sure of your target and what lies beyond it.

Thoughts on Using Non-Lethal Force

Notes for this section:

  • Clarification on using lethal force when compared to non-lethal force.
  • Using personal non-lethal force is a last ditch effort. If someone is trying to injure or kill you, why be nice to them?
  • Of course, sometimes we are either not allowed by law, particularly in larger cities, or when traveling. But when you can use lethal force, you should. For reasons I’ll explain.
  • Points include:
    • What happens after the fact, when the police won’t be coming for a very long time, if ever?
    • If you detain them, when the police do show up, you’ll be charged with kidnapping (unlawfully holding someone against their will).
    • If you let them go, they now know they you’re hesitant to use lethal force and you need to worry about them coming back with friends for revenge.
    • Non-lethal force is best when you have no choice, but I see it as a primary means to de-escalate the situation.
      • A hardened perimeter makes it difficult to get into your house.
      • An alarm system announces the breech.
      • A barking dog inside suggests a fanged welcoming.
      • etc.
    • If you harden your home with these non-lethal measures and they don’t move on, choosing to to overcome all of these obstacles and barriers to get inside, then you should know that they’re not there for a cup of coffee. They’re there to hurt you and take your stuff.
