Hate Exercise Less

This is a guest article by Greg Mumm. Greg and I discussed the importance of staying fit, especially for those trying to be prepared for disasters and emergencies. For many of us (me included) working out isn’t one of our favorite things to do, and would prefer to do almost anything else. Greg has wrote a book about how to get a better workout and stay motivated and hate the whole ‘workout’ thing less. You can find out more on his website, HateExerciseLess.org. by Greg Mumm Is being strong and healthy part of your prepping? Is your time important? As a … Continue reading

Prepare for Disaster with this CPR Lesson

by Monica Gomez The time may come when someone in your family suffers a cardiac emergency. You need to know how to administer emergency CPR so the person has a better chance of survival, especially in the event that there isn’t anyone else around who can help. Immediate action to help re-start someone’s heart can save his or her life. According to the American Heart Association, people who develop cardiac arrest at home or away from a hospital are less likely to survive. The percentage is low—less than 8 percent. The American Heart Association points out that effective CPR can, at the least, … Continue reading

Prepper News Watch for October 13, 2014

We’re hearing a lot about how the healthcare worker for the US Ebola Index Patient became infected with Ebola, even though they wore “protective gear.” However, what seems to be lacking in these stories is the type of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) used. Everyone is making a big deal about becoming infected while wearing PPE, but everyone is also overlooking that unless your PPE provides 100% coverage, you’re not protected. Case in point: Watch this video about the “Ebola kits” that “UCLA Infectious Disease Experts” have assembled. Notice how there is no protection for the top and back of the … Continue reading

Want to Know Why Healthcare Workers are Becoming Infected with Ebola?

Infection control is not fun. Having to wear a hazard suit and/or gown, mask, gloves, goggles, hood, and boots/booties is very hot and uncomfortable. Try wearing an N95 mask for 8 hours and see how well you fare. People will cut corners any chance they get to increase their comfort. If you don’t decontaminate properly, infection is likely. Simply put: lack of proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and infection control is why healthcare workers are getting infected. When you don’t protect 100% of your body from infected patients, the odds of you contracting the disease increases dramatically. You must consider … Continue reading

Researchers Find Vulnerability in Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria

As reported in Voice of America: Scientists say drug-resistant bacteria surround themselves with a defensive barrier, but researchers at the University of East Anglia in Britain have found a crack in that armor. A team led by Professor Changjiang Dong studied a class of bacteria that is especially resistant to antibiotics. Writing in the journal Nature, he reports the team identified how the bacteria transport the building blocks of the barrier to the outer surface. “We have demonstrated that the bacteria would die if the gate [allowing access to the surface] is locked,” he said. This newly-recognized vulnerability provides a … Continue reading
